Tips on preparing your trophy for the Taxidermist
Deer-
Many trophies are ruined in the first few hours after death. As soon as the animal dies, bacteria begins to attack the carcass. Warm, humid weather accelerates bacteria growth. If you know you are going hunting, be prepared. Bring an ice chest with plenty of ice and submerge your trophy in it after it has been skinned.
Fish-
Do not gut your fish. Wrap it in a very wet towel making sure all of the fins or flat up against body, and submerge in ice or keep cold. Then bring to taxidermist or freeze.
Birds-
Do not gut the bird. Rinse off any blood on feathers with water. Fold head under wing, slide into plastic bag or towel. Do not bend tail feathers. Bring to taxidermist as soon as possible or freeze.
Mammals-
Animals, coyotes or smaller should not be skinned unless by a professional. Do not gut the animal. Small mammals especially cornivores will spoil quickly because of their thin hide and bacteria. As soon as the animal cools completely, put in a plastic bag or wrap in a towel and freeze. With the epidemic of rabies evident in many areas of this country, take every safety measure necessary when handling your game.
